Green & White magazine: Fighters

USask reached out to our team to create a set of images to go along with the cover story of their upcoming issue for the alumni magazine. The subject of the story and photography is Amy Smith-Morris, a national powerlifter—and cancer survivor. The article is about her survival story and it was our job to create a set of images to show her grit and determination.

The article reads “Smith-Morris, who returned to powerlifting after her chemotherapy treatments, has focused her life on helping others battling cancer.” That is a powerful message and deserved powerful visuals. Instead of just your typical portrait, we took a more dramatic approach. We made the creative decision to use high contrast ratios in the images to connect with the struggle and uncertainty that Amy went through.

To achieve the final look we used creative lighting to highlight our subject and allow the background to fade in the distance. This helps the viewer feel the same focus Amy feels when she starts to lift. Amy changed into her lifting outfit, and we put her to work. We had her run through a real workout and then we just started shooting. It was important that at a close glance you could see the perspiration on her skin.

Our client was thrilled with the result. The photographs help show a part of Amy that is strong and unwavering which was a perfect match to this editorial piece.
